May

by Ken Harnisch

May vies with October
To be the month of dreams;
For feeling thankful to be alive;
For wanting to turn the pages
In the old book and read something
New.

There is a spring this year.
Riotous pastels dot the trees
While a veil of soft green
Paints the horizon
With promise and revival.

The resolutions are dusted off.
Legs cranky with age
Find a way to move along
The pavement, then
Ambulate to places
Where the young girls laugh
And the old ones smile.

The sun laves old skin
And weary hearts. The soul is in
For a grooming and necessary
Exfoliation.
May has returned.
At least one happy poet hurrahs
Knowing skirts are back in bloom.

October is still my favorite but I did love this and after the storms that moved through here last night it was a pleasant reminder. Clever and vivid in images..smh

"There is a spring this year". I really like how there is nothing questioning about this - you give us May and much to look forward to, and the last two lines just make me laugh. Thanks for this.

May will always be a favourite month of mine, and I am secretely enamoured with October. That you have chosen to open your poem with both is an allure ... as is the richness of details ... and yes! Ken, that closure is a smilebringer.

Haha! That last line is a doozy! I like the idea of dusting off your resolutions in May, trying again. With everything young and fresh and alive, it seems like a better time than January to give them a go.

While May brings in Summer; October brings in winter- both seasons I don't like Loved the last line- I stop wearing dresses and skirts in the winter and start again in May- good write- great images. A poem for everyone to read and enjoy- thanks!
