IF

by George Hoerner

if i am
poet
let my
words
entwine
the mind
to fire
and
the eye
to tear
at life's
truth
and so
rift
the heart
to bear
the loss
heard
as ears
seem
deaf to
tragedy

let the
words
sing
sweet
and soft
as
silence
says
nothing
except
to
the soul

Author's Note: I expect to do more work on this. It came to me as I was just waking and I had to get down.

I agree, this poem is fine as is, and yet there is the muse to contend with, who never sleeps, pursuing our ear, whilst that ear is sleeping and whilst it is awake. and even when we think we are done with a poem, the muses are like the persistent waves always realigning the shoreline in their own image, which is pretty near our own.
