An Evening

by George Hoerner

the striking figure walked quickly
past me in the falling snow
tall with long purposeful legs
his strides carried him ahead of me

wondering where he was going
i tried to follow him up 7th avenue
but he was lost in the snow

moving more quickly now
not wanting to be late
we'd have to eat later

rounding the corner
there it was
in all its splendor
Lincoln Center
the opera, theater, concert hall
glistening in lights
through the snow

moving inside
there he was
so striking
in his ankle length
fur coat
drink in hand
waiting for the lights
to blink indicating
the beginning
of the evenings
end

...george, man o' man i like this...from the first stanza i'm looking for that striking figure too, a whirlwind trip but not too fast and the wording of the last three-four lines is superb...charlie

I agree with Charlie, George.. this one is amazing in that it grabbed the reader right along with the persona and brought us there with him. What a wonderful sight to see ! Thank you for such a wonderful description. I really felt like I was there.. alisa ;-)

George, I love your odes. upon their ingestion, they always leave a good aftertaste like butterscotch for the imagination, and George though I was in the area of Lincoln Center at the time, no one would mistake me for a striking figure, but pacific.
