Demise Of

by George Hoerner

don't look too far ahead
when we die if not before
our names will be lost
within hours
forgotten except
by a very few

any poetry written
will be reduced
to a few characters
in some text message

future generations
will speak at speeds
approaching sound
and will no longer
concern themselves
with understanding
emoticons will pass
for feelings

libraries will be burned
not because of politics
but because reading
has long since become
a historical oddity
relegated to a half token
at most in the newest
archeological sound bite

Do you really think so? Books last SO much longer than electronics!!! I get freaked out sometimes because my "art" is all stuck in here. I hope what you think will happen doesn't, but I'm afraid of the same thing.

Who wants to read "To Kill a Mocking Bird" when we've got reality TV? The goal of western culture is instant gratification. You are getting me cranked up! Nice piece. Hang it in every classroom.

be that as it may, George, I will never forget your name or you or your poetry. the world can do what it will, but it can't take that notion away from me, that I will recall what I will till fat omega sings.
