life-a dog's ear by Charlie Morgan
you needn't start in with your blather
and leave the air with a stench of roses,
long dead,
dried and bookmarked.
a dog's ear.
turning leaves mark the times going away.
carrying old skin, thoughts, dark of day
light of night,
stacking, piling.
a bent torso.
the train shudders to a lurch, churns,
leaving the station boardwalk a memory,
wispy lives,
drying, tightning.
a tree thirsty.
i take my seat, conducting
the sound and fury
of the strum of life.
soon, the baton
will pass.

Posted by George Hoerner on 05/01/08 at 09:46 PM Very nice Charlie. I think we all conduct "the sound and the fury" it's just that most of us aren't even aware of it. Well done sir! It has always been one of my favorite books.
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 05/02/08 at 12:52 AM I love stanza two, and find that I am sitting not far behind you. This is a fine piece!
Posted by Keith McFarlane on 05/02/08 at 02:19 PM Agree on stanza two -- it's brilliant, and the "stacking, piling" evokes and end-of-life feeling, counting what one has collected. "a bent torso" in view of the damage gravity has done (probably in both senses). One more thing -- the overall symmetry is Tyger-fearful, leaving the right imprint. Bravo...
Posted by Alison McKenzie on 05/02/08 at 03:06 PM That's a funny word, "blather". Just saying the word itself leaves echoes of idiocy in the air. Sometimes I like to read your stuff outloud, and this one has a particularly crisp rhythm that I adore. Your line breaks are just impeccable here. Sometimes I ache for the passing of the baton, and other times the glory of weilding it is just too much. I really like this! I've had to read and re-read it to satisfy the sudden addiction to it.
