Shallow

by Alison McKenzie

My faith is a shallow pool -
Muddy.
I’d advise you to refrain
From jumping in,
And don’t test the water -
Frigid in this late season of cycles.

And I don’t know Bliss,
Though try as I might
To reach that destination,
I am lost,
Off the map in some remote,
Unexplored mountain range.

I caught a glimpse of Peace,
Once,
A gloriously brilliant flash
Of inspiration,
Elusive now and camouflaged
By the canopy of overgrowth
In this lonely forest.

My years of prayer appear
As a morning mist of mystery
That I can neither taste, nor grasp,
Nor gather up for salvation.

I wander, lusty for connection,
Scavenging the last of the berries in my hunger,
Aching for the lodge that might provide
Shelter from the coming freeze.

I need to bathe,
But my faith is a shallow pool,
The water, muddy.
And I advise you to refrain
From jumping in.

An incredible open hearted reaching out even though you warn us not to jump in. Nifty exercise in reverse psychology Alison.
