destiny's appetite by Charlie Morgan
people leave town and never come back;
but i can see from where they left.
when i go, the trail will be grown-over
by vegetation as deserving to live as i;
and no more obtrusive to the world than i.
both of Mother; both alone, limpid waters.
both share mitochondria, breaths. but, i
leave town, with vegetation waving goodbye.
to turn around would be so easy, facile;
and yet a Destiny is robbed of it's prey.

Posted by Ryan Nardi on 04/18/08 at 08:57 PM excellent. and a bonus prize awarded for "mitochondria, breaths". great read. another favorite i believe. it can't be avoided.
Posted by A. Paige White on 04/19/08 at 12:45 AM Yeah, I've got to agree with Ryan. Mitochondria in the midst of this was sheer genius. I can never read this word without seeing the face of my favorite instructor in college, for A&P, standing in front of the class doing his thing and doing it so well, we loved learning the most mundane cellular engines. Great poem Chaz. I think you're on a roll.
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 04/19/08 at 07:35 PM Ooooh, my new favorite of yours! The gardener in me loves the vegetation's role in all of this; the basic mitochondria - how that does roll off the tongue!!; and you leave me pondering destiny and directions. Thank you.
