Shipwreck of a Day

by Sandy M. Humphrey

"Pride and Joy" is jammin in my
front blue jean pocket
sending me mixed signals
for when I flip open the phone
I get a chill from the voice
answering my expectant "Hello"
I had no idea I was in dangerous water
nor did I see the tall white ice
before I felt my day crash
So cold and brittle are words spoken
I pull the phone away as the winter burn
stings my ear and I must check
for frost bite not that it matters
for there is an awkward silence
I hate those dead in the water moments
when I can feel us sinking fast

Do I jump in feet first with
ramblin conversation and dog paddle
my way across the surface trying
to reach you or is this just one
of those times when it would be
best to grab a preserver and hold
on for dear life and see if we
drift along the same wave and
come together or float
further apart in this icy sea
of controversy, I call across
to you in your angry lonliness
words of encouragement and jump into
the nearest lifeboat as I hang
up the phone hoping we do not
get lost at sea

Author's Note: Icebergs are deceptive, whether you meet them on land or sea... you never know how deep they are and when they will break..smh

Hi Sandy. We all must allow ourselves our own personal "Titantics", glad the lifeboat's handy. Delighted. Thanks.

...sandy, this is a wonderfully descriptive pome[sic] about relationships...at some place in tieme the OTHER just becomes/is/whatever different and we could be stammering, errrah? wha?...good write, charlie

Robust in symbolism. Consistent analogy throughout. One feels strongly the uncertainty the "hanging on" but fearful of the relationship as to where it is going and what will be the outcome.

Wow. Kindred spirits indeed. Boy, do I connect with what you are describing here at different points along my way. I'm not sure what was said, but guessing is clear enough, I think. I feel the chill of this all the way in Oregon! Thanks!

Clever analogy and use of an extended metaphor. Great to read you again Sandy! :o)
