Winter

by George Hoerner

winter has been long
snow still measured in feet
rests on the back deck
and in the front yard

but the sun rises earlier
the daytime temperature is higher
than it has been for months
and any new falling snow melts quickly

we are still warned about planting flowers
until early may at best
but somehow when i see your smile
i know spring is coming soon

tell me the truth
do the flowers really
winter in your heart?

slick analogy at the end...metaphor or whatever it is. either way, it's chilling truth is one chilly iceblock to swallow. amazing the effects of a season...this poem made me think. i like that.

wonderfully put, George. and as to the last question, yes, flowers do winter in our hearts when there is love involved. what better year round fodder?
