The Gift by Dan KastenTo recognize when one has been given a gift beyond
their capacity to knowingly repay it can make one humble
on this day, I kneel and thank God for giving
me a gift that he does not have to give at all
as I sat on an airplane
flying through the worst storms I could imagine
looking out the window at the darkest of dark clouds
rain and wind swirling at every altitude
with no sight of sky or ground
pitch and yaw taken hold by a string unseen
shortened of breath by forces taking me to the edge of my own fear
it was at that point that I could feel a new life being breathed into me
telling me that I have far to go in time before I am to leave
I say a prayer of thanks for providing me a gift of such magnitude
for I am a person who has done nothing
more to deserve this gift than to have faith
in what wind and rain can bring
with much to learn and a little more gray
I stare into your eyes this day
grateful that this gift
will take exactly my lifetime
no more and no less
for me to repay.
03/25/2008 Author's Note: For Suzy.
On March 24, 2008, around 2:45PM Suzy and Dan got remarried. Afterwards, we shared a wonderful bottle of wine and enjoyed a beautiful spring day. Well done, I'd say.
