Despair

by George Hoerner

this despair of our
good mornings and good nights
mingles in my mind
with thoughts of goodbyes
which must be running
in your thoughts
of changing this or that
to still the urge
to just give up

did it begin just past "hello"
this time of indifference
as it winks its eye in the mirror
looking right on past
considering the last "hello"

as if it made a difference
to the endless pins and pricks
of guilt stuck beneath
the skin of thought
as memory exits stage left
while heart exits stage right

but time will stop
this calendar of days and nights
of discontent and disconnect
and lay it beside
our death bed

A really enjoyable treatment, despite the subject. Stanza's 2 and 3 were exceptional.

Man this is dark. But it is also that reality of thought of loss and goodbyes that gathers dust in our mind unto our death..

It is real, isn't it George, that despair of knowing that bliss has run its course. *sigh* You write of it beautifully and with the sad expertise of someone who knows firsthand.

frightening. this idea terrifies me, it is everywhere, poems, novels, lives that surround me, i hope to escape it! nevertheless your words mirror my fears, very well written.

Whoever said that death is the end of suffering was right. And this eloquently scripted piece will surely stand the test of unforgotten time.
