the cause of the black sheep

by Emily Tong

Taking up the cause of the black sheep, I.
And you with your sad silenced pets never
Gave a thought more to the cause than not; why
Would you? Not be it to you worth ever
Much more to lend an ear or a toe or
A spinal column to anyone you
Didn’t think needed it. And the black sheep, for
Whom the symbol wouldst clang, means nothing. True,
It was an odd request, to aid the less-
Than-thought-of underground of sheep, blue
Red, green and yellow saving, the excess
Of unwanted wool is too great, the cause
Now being to rid us unwanted flaws.

I liked it, for what that's worth.
