The Mississippi River and How Things Will Be

by Megan Guimbellot

I smell spring in the air tonight playing through my window and around my skin
The winter winds giving way to warmer nights and on these nights I just cant stay in bed
Something about the way the stars seem to flash and blink calls me out from between satin sheets and onto city streets, down towards the river
Where electric lights can't reach far enough to blot out the stars.

And on the banks of the Mississippi, removed from squealing tires and neon lights
I watch the river move and twist, as it has for years and years
As it will again tomorrow, and after
And I have to wonder if I will ever know the kind of flow,
The steadiness,
The ease and effortlessness
That these muddy waters hold within them.

But while the moon reflects, silver, smooth, and flickers along the placid surface
I know enough to take a breath
Take it all in, and enjoy the moment
The river and the stars, the moon and the shadows
And wait patiently for spring and what it has in store.

Author's Note: how strange of me. I guess I'm starting to look towards the future and realizing that things will happen as they will. I'm optimistic...oh, and spring is coming fast :)

a new tone for you for sure. pretty and effortless...relaxed. it's like a whole new concept of serenity has hit you like a ton of bricks. this is written by a true poet's soul though...that much anyone can see.
