game by Mary Frances Spencerlife holds court
bounces basketball years
through ever rising hoops
runs these wooden floors
rubber soles slap and tap
dances around
hands defend
pass the ball
or shoot
silent strategy
teamwork
solo lay up
all about the score
this gym gleams
bright moments
timer digital and electric
tabulation
buzzer loud
time out
half time
another
game

Posted by Tony Whitaker on 02/23/08 at 07:37 AM I always enjoy reading your poetry. This is written in my, currently, favorite form of lean, clean free verse. I also sense an allegory of a basketball game with life's relentless tournament of games. |

Posted by George Hoerner on 02/23/08 at 04:12 PM I love the first stanza! And yes, we grow quickly from play to much more serious play be it love or war. All to quickly they grow. Great write! |
Posted by Alisa Js on 04/21/08 at 07:56 AM Another well written piece you have penned for our enjoyment. On a personal note, you look way tooooooo young to have a son playing basketball... Do share your secret for the fountain of youth with me, PLEASE! Aloha... alisa ;-) |
