continuations

by George Hoerner

i continue to continue
from 0 to 65, 66, 67...
as fast as time allows
a decade at a time in great leaps
stopping occasionally to recover
from the inevitable stone wall
unable to turn over the hour glass
watching colors go from black and white
to dark shades of gray
and back to just off white

from understanding everything
to wondering where and who i am
from nothing to being and back again
the road is long but far to short
maps galore and sign posts too
i chuckle at the beach as i read
"swim at your own risk - no life guard"

unbuckling the only safety belt
i've ever not known - my mind
i find i've left behind
treasures of a different kind
folks - friends - encounters too
here and gone never quite lost
filed away like once read books
needing only a name or title
to open a vast room of memories

was there more to give or take
one more moment or one less
history hinges on cause and effect
things done or not
chaos some might say
me thinks there are no answers
except those that we make up

your poetry never strays from the human element. it seems eager ever to present itself fit for human consumption. I dine on your words, George which are quite substantial, and the feeling in my gut is that I never come up feeling short and less than fed.
