Time in a Bottle

by Kristina Woodhill

there are those
moments
that stand still
and hold us close

atop the Astoria Column
on Coxcomb Hill
overlooking the Oregon coastline
and the mighty Columbia River
we stood and looked down 125 feet
to the mowed green grass
grins above meeting grins below
as from above our fingers let loose
the balsa planes we'd bought
from the parking lot vendor
letting the breeze mandate
this toss and catch
by hands happy to play
the game

feather light wood
launched on
the willing breeze
the intent gaze
the held breath
the faces craning up
to see which way to run
and run, that yell
“don't hit the tree!”
while laughing voices
float down, echoing and
filling the parking lot
like the hold of an old ship
heavy with treasures
from a long voyage

...I can see the happy faces in this. Excited and windblown, and there's no place like the Oregon coast! Delighted. Thanks.
