Pain Killer by Nancy Ames"My drug of preference
is in stock on the shelf;
my life is so intense;
I revolve around myself.
Sometimes quite late at night,
or when I'm feeling hollow,
or when I've had a fright,
I let go of my pillow...
And struggle to my feet
and reach out for my slipper,
afraid that I might meet
that grinning 'jack-the-zipper'.
I don't take more than two,
whatever they might say;
it's anaesthetic glue
and keeps the pain away." 01/25/2008
Author's Note: The character speaking here is an old lady, slightly ridiculous, but most of us can be sympathetic, I think.

| Posted by George Hoerner on 01/26/08 at 03:00 AM I hope when you get old you're allowed to let your life revolve around yourself. As long as I can have my Celebrex I can make through the day. Nice write. |
| Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 01/26/08 at 04:59 PM I'm sure at one time we've all had or have to reach for the pain-killer of choice, and not necessarily a pharmaceutical product. I really like the metaphor of 'jack the zipper' in lieu of body bag. As per an old lady, the third stanza also nicely touches on the fear of falling and breaking a bone, especially a hip... the beginning of the end for many of the elderly. Well done Nancy! |
