LETTERS

by George Hoerner

letters slip silently one by one

onto this page

growing into bits and pieces of words

and i begin to see the smallest pieces

of these half words

arrange and rearrange themselves

looking for the connection one to another like people

moving around the page testing their position

looking carefully then turning quickly to look elsewhere

groups drawn together by some inexplicable force

much as color is drawn to objects

loosing direction on occasion then moving again

until joining with other pieces

to complete a word here and there

words then emerge to look at this newly discovered world

creeping across the page changing direction and position

establishing a phrase here a lie there

as if forming some picture of a shifting reality

the light dims slightly

and i catch a glimpse of

this movement of words and phrases

as they vie for position

demanding a greater of lesser role

in the formation of something

that wants to be whole

not unlike the person

from whose pen this ink flows

I am always tickled to see your poetry from different angles when I remember how carefully time has passed in your life for you to arrive at such observations. Thanks, George, for always casting a new light on things!!!

Captivating read and strong reminder of how I myself always feel more complete by putting letters together. Guess that's why I've stuck with it all these years. Season's best to you and yours George! :o)
