A Christmas Poem

by Mary Ellen Smith

Christmas 1957

Tinsel, lights and sound, a jingling in the air.

It’s cold here by my window pane but I don’t seem to care.

I’m watching out for Santa, I feel that he is near.

It’s snowing and Christmas Eve is here.

I see a streak of light that leaves a trail of mist.

And I know that it is more than the treetops being kissed

By frosty clouds that pass by, by the lightly falling snow.

I’m watching out for Santa so I’ll know.

This Christmassy delight that comes by once a year,

For this I’ll stay awake and welcome Santa here.

But if my eyelids fail me, when I awake I’ll see

Everything that Christmas is to me.

Christmas 2007

Now many a year has passed and I’m a grandma now.

Winter still holds a cold grip on every twig and bough.

My grandkids try to stay awake like I did a long, long time ago,

I guess every child just has a need to know.

I decorate the house with heirlooms handed down.

And underneath the tree I place a Christmas town.

And as I hold my dear lil grandkids tight, a story I’ll recite

About a curious little girl on another Christmas night.

Then together we’ll watch for Santa until they fall asleep.

And I’ll say a Christmas prayer for their little souls to keep,

As I kiss them on their curls and tuck them in their nice warm beds

I know that Christmas lives inside their hearts and heads.

Yes, Christmas lives on inside their hearts and heads.

A delight! ...and '57 was my first, so I count my blessings as I count my Christmases. Thanks and a very merry one to you, too!

I love the passage of time in these two looks at Christmas, the expectations and the later perspective. Just a pleasure to read and I enjoyed the gentle rhyme.

Ahhh nostalgia in a warm fuzzy! Comparison of Christmas Past and Christmas Present very effective.
