season

by Mary Frances Spencer

if i could squeeze
pine needles
cinnamon sticks
nutmeg cloves
oranges
a sticky sap
or candle
hot mulled
wine
of december

or i could
slide across
crunchy white
throw another icy
sphere
breathe alive
the cold
wrap in bulky
layers on
fallen snow-angel
tracks

i see
evergreens against
blue
clouds roll in
and out
weak winter light
streaks silver
rain

i hear
fire crackle home
children laugh vacation
corks festive
popcorn rustle
movie holiday
soundtracks

i know
another year
sweetly
departing
i hang the stockings
and
hope

Wonderful imagery!

Throughtout the stanzas' images, (all so wonderful!) you have incorporated the 5 senses. I don't just see these images in my mind - it's a sensory poem. With each stanza, I'm invited into your space and share with you all the things you love abouT winter. Look out, here comes a snowball! ;-)

My nose just crinkles up in expectation with this first stanza. Yesterday we played in the snow. The hung stockings and the passing year sets me up for not only Christmas but also the new year to come. Thank you.

congratulations on POTD! You catch much of the feel, the atmosphere, the aura of the season through terse, pithy verse.
