I Pray My Family Understands - A Triolet

by Tony Whitaker

As I leave for a foreign land
My heart hurts for all left behind
Friends, family and my rock and roll band
As I leave for a foreign land
I pray my family will understand
I pray new friends and a band I’ll find
As I leave for a foreign land
My heart hurts for all left behind

Author's Note: I had the need to write a traditional form. This is the triolet. It contains eight lines of rhyming verse. The first and last two lines repeat themselves. The first line is repeated in the fourth and there are only two rhymes. You can figure out the rest. :)

I understand the need for certain traditional forms with certain emotions. I think that is why I love poetry so much. It seems to add (even if only in my own mind)a much more solid dignity to the thoughts and emotions experienced. Writing it out with a certain form, is like taking a deeper walk into the experience. I enjoyed this. I lift my prayers along with yours as incense to the Lord for a beautiful new life and the understanding you need from the old.

Wow, cool idea for a poem structure and most effective. I am totally envious of your moving to Switzerland. You are brave and leaving family behind is very hard for me. What an adventure!
