Perfume and Cigarettes

by Anastasia Shows

After a night in your company
A night in your presence.
Whatever you will.
I’d smell my hair.
Clothing.
Skin.
You were there all over again.

The sweat of your day in the Mississippi heat
And the sweet stench of Marlboro reds danced
On my flowy outfits that I wore confidently.
Without a hitch.

There came a day,
When
You stayed away.
You never let me in again.
(you never did anyway)
You had time to think
To flicker.
To blink.
You blew out my lighter that night.
I smell of perfume again.

And a lovely perfume it is wafting through this melancholy memory.

What a powerful picture you paint with your words.
