burnt red

by Mary Frances Spencer

today
i hiked
dusty trails
another planet
griffith park
fire-stripped
ravaged
burnt red
blackened raw
only manzanitas
scorched arms reaching
into blue
hopeful
still anchored
where
green tendrils
sprout hope
weeds
soft stubble
slow time
alien recovery
360 degrees
above hazy los angeles
i saw rebirth
in the breeze
as the
cat-tails bloom
on mars

Author's Note: I hiked Griffith Park today which has recently been burnt into another planet. Very disconcerting to see such devastation. MFS

I live very close to Griffith Park and haven't yet been to see the fire damage. What a great perspective, not only of the damage, but also of the survivors and regrowth.

a powerful reminder, Mary Frances, that as with the phoenix, parks which have been rendered, charred, must rise from their ashes as this one surely will, given time and attention from your quill.
