Before the Dawn

by Tony Whitaker

i rejoice in the hours
before the dawn
while most
are still in bed

my mind races
with imagination
and transcends
visions and voices
in my head

a quiet stillness
settles over the land
in the mist
of the waning night
before the cock crows
its bellicose prose
as the mourning dove
coos for lost love

i bathe in this passion
for these words
i ponder
such imagery
fills me with wonder
seeing the dawn break
i must finish this verse
before night
befalls black
to orange red
and the night
with dawnÂ’s light
is bled

Very evocative, the pairing of the poet's moment and the breaking dawn. Good rewrite.
