rain season

by Carolyn Coville

it felt like fall for the first time today...

after four days of gray clouds,
the raindrops finally began to splatter onto the planks of my deck
I welcomed them, relieved to feel something other than
the warm sunshine that lingered for three weeks.
I put my hand to the window pane, imagining it was your chest,
but its cold hardness was not the warmth of your flesh.

it was then I accepted that summer was over and so were we.

I love that last line. It sums this fantastic piece up perfectly.
