Sake Soul Searching

by Christopher Shin

Lines, long, and strong.
Mixed with the parts
of my blood that seems
to scream with the night
life all around me.

Dilated and Diluted
my mind begins
swim as the liquor
fills my soul.

I close my eyes
as I crane my neck
back as the shot
slithers down
my throat.

Ashes mix with
my lungs as I try
to forget about the
tragedy.

My life is full
of empty pains,
and all the pain
killers that are
my friends can't
solve my thoughts.

So I'll drink,
and hopefully the
night will end
with my hopes
pushed a side.

The stars can't
hold me down,
but you can just
kiss me with your
eyes.

And I'll pretend
I am doing fine.

This has an appropriately deep and drunken feel, the atmosphere rich and one is drawn into this introspective time with you. The word "sake" to me has the meaning of a drimk, and also as in for the "sake" of, both have meaning here. The eyes drinking at the end it a sweetness, but the "pretend" is sobering. The word "tragedy" makes one stop and think--wondering is this specific, a horrific event you are responding to...or simply the challenge of life itself. An interesting, thoughtful poem, with strong feeing and detail.

Christopher, the opening stanza of this is perhaps one of the strongest opening stanzas I have read in a long time, particularly the first four lines. The poem seems to be a reverse crescendo, starting with an opening volley and then ending on an almost wistfully sad note - "you can just kiss me with your eyes"... I love all of the feelings you convey and the clarity with which you paint this picture. Favorited.

Christopher, you have taken a topic and put it through a maze of emotions. I like how the first and second to last stanzas are a mingled maze. Good work.
