"Bad Jokes: The Life and Aftermath" by Max PhineasI watch the slow burn
of my joke in a head-on
with the invisible brick wall
dividing you from me.
Sizzling, Fizzling
in a crumpled mess.
Someone please call an ambulance
And erase this scene
In the following silence
I watch the words
Dangle above:
The elusive Perfect Punchline.
Reeling, rolling from the wreckage
I watch and wonder and wait...
Relief!
Starting at the corners
Your lips turn
A pity laugh- the lowest form of flattery!
But a pretty laugh indeed.
And the smile is genuine
It's all I need.
I was once told
That those who love you
Are always honest
And never deceive.
But I think those who love you most
Let you dwell in your delusions.
And I should know. 11/03/2007

Posted by Rebecca Lin on 11/04/07 at 05:34 AM Wow I love this! I completely know how you feel. Sometimes I wish my life was like a novel I was writing and I could edit the things I say. I think this poem is wonderful. |
Posted by Quentin S Clingerman on 11/05/07 at 12:24 AM This brought a chuckle! Isn't it the truth! Sometimes we'd just like to be let think we've said (or done) it right! |
