Ode to John Cage

by Jim Benz

He puts his ear to the blank page and listens for a voice
Nothing is heard or even hinted at
He peels the page, skin by skin, as one would peel the skin of an onion
Not realizing that the voice is merely silent
As if in contemplation
And it never occurs to him to engage the silence
To touch each skin as if it were a revelation
An inexpressible hymn to beauty
That would bring tears to his eyes if he could only hear it

Jim, thanks for forcing me to explore this man and his works. You always pique my curiosity. His following quote was pretty cool to me, as a gardener - perhaps it is the finding of the common ground that draws people together - even as I marvel at his peace with silence or perceived emptiness and what can grow within. "My work is what I do and always involves writing materials, chairs, and tables. Before I get to it, I do some exercises for my back and I water the plants, of which I have around two hundred."

I love his music. I just turned on the recording and stared at your page for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. Glad you got the editing right. I's perfect.

Exceptionally well-crafted. Exceptionally.

"...I have nothing to say, I am saying it, and that is poetry"--John Cage. Supremely and deceptively apropos, Jim. Thanks.

...the synaptic whine of cardiac - a rest? For there is no s, or so it is rumoured...
