smart by Charlie Morganpope gregory hasn't invented the calendar year
for some of my college students to graduate;
an alaskan summer will be their cap and gown,
melting, giving larvae fresh air and protein.
making tomorrow's roads with our bones
is the career of all mankind; ancestors' itch
runs deep as the later generations dry
and shrivel 'til left is hair and yesterday.
protoplasmic units wanting to reach the stars
beget units that want to be a hollywood star;
sadly, the beat goes on, the lesser the loser
and some win, some: wolfhides on a barb fence.
worth and value: adrift, hungering, yearning
to be measured, used fully; alas, the thumb
of the panda allows it to strip bamboo shoots
but not let him draw a da vinci's mona lisa. 10/10/2007 Posted on 10/10/2007 Copyright © 2026 Charlie Morgan

| Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 10/10/07 at 10:59 PM Hmmmm, I like this. What is each generation's goal, worth, value? Loved stanza 3 - makes one wonder about the phrase - "we've come sooooo far.." The "wolfhides on a barb fence" - a great visual. And now you've got me wondering what a panda thinks about, really.... I'm definitely thumbs up for this poem. ;) |
