October Night

by Kristina Woodhill

minutes before 1 a. m.
a gun shot the night awake
and seconds later tag touched
echoes with its mate
both swallowed in an instant
by a hungry maw of black
additions to the silent
dead of night

Author's Note: gun shots in the country at night - could have been racoons, maybe....

Down here, it would have probably been opossum or armadillo, lol. Not uncommon here at all. Like Dave said you set the tone for sudden tenseness.

You bring new senses to the blindness of night. Excellent. Thank you.
