Departures/Arrivals

by Don Matley

Leaves
turning
falling
raking
burning
perfuming the crisp,invigorating air.

Days
shortening
chilling
darkening
ending too early now.

Nights
frosting
dominating
blackening
killing the panoramas

Squirrels
scurrying
harvesting
nesting
cuddling up
waiting for warm blankets of snow.

Geese
veeing
moving on
joining the flock
honking in line-ups

Winds
picking up
blowing cold
howling trees
haunting the woods
rustling the leaves

Autumn
arriving

Summer
gone.
