Dragonfly

by Manas Moksha

A stained glass lattice
of wings
protect the space
around
It feeds here
and in the moment of admiration
the dragonfly calls it home

Low in the reed they prey
when it rains
High over the creek they pump their wings
when there is sun

Oversized and sleek
goggles for stealth missions and patrol
Warrior painted masks
and armored exoskeletons

No more mosquitoes
buzzing round the ear
No more mosquitoes
where one can not see or hear

A sensation on the hairs
the incessant urge to scratch and rub
The paranoia of one that is near
a blood-sucking pestilence hub

Red and inflamed
hypersensitive and pained
leftover mosquito saliva
from a dirty proboscis

Frustration with the itchy
an overwhelming sensation
of histamine-fueled
anxiety, tension, and aggravation

Afterbite and off
poison coils and skin so soft
Malaria
yellow, and dengue fever

The dragonfly is the third eye
it watches and it hunts
Talons and transparent wings
doing push-ups in the sky

With large eyes and long torso
the dragonfly sees them all
The hired hand
does it freely

A mosquito hawk
for your dusk of every day
from the river to the wood
A mosquito soldier really

Meter without rhyme. This was a fun read. I felt like the dragonfly itself as I buzzed through this piece, protecting the words from these deadly skeeters... Excellent!

More dragonflies have found their way into my livingroom this year!!!!! I don't know what that's all about, but they are delicate, gorgeous creatures. Back in the day, I was out in nature just sort of chillin, and I felt a tickle on my big toe. It was a HUGE dragonfly kissing my toe, and I suddenly felt such a rush of love it was amazing. I LOVE dragonflies!!! This was lovely!

I love this! I've been seeing them all over the place the last few weeks. One hangs out in the parking lot where I work and almost every day 3 or 4 hover to say hi when I'm stopped in traffic. I've been driving this same drive for over 4 years and never seen the first one before so it's been very cool! This poem gave me a greater appreciation of it. Thanks!

Congratulations on POTD for Dragonfly. You almost have me scratching! ;0) Very vivid! Dragonflies are a very colorful part of my childhood!

Good choice for POTD. Congrats! One of my favourite insects well described. IMHO a stronger ending might be to drop those last two lines and connect the previous two to does it freely. :o)

Congratulations on your POTD! I'm another dragonfly fan. I simply love them. Yes, they are catchers of miserable skeeters, which I totally dislike. Sometimes their wings have beautiful iridescent colors...
