This Side of Never

by Alisa Js

this path we've taken
are you sure?
that it's you along side with me,
laughing and joking and carrying on
is it your face I see?
as I gaze expectantly,
or a mask provided, ever so conveniently ...

you know the one painted with smiles
and all this time I thought you were real,
I hardly noticed the signs
flailing and lagging behind,
wooden steps in the sand, scraping quietly ...

guess I got lost in my thoughts again
plans for the future
dreaming,
and failed to realize I was walking alone
as you made other plans ...

stuck to the side of this teetering fence
dangerously close to insanity's breath,
flames on my shoulder
there's those voices again,
somewhere on this side of never gonna' be ...

tell me I’m wrong and sadly mistaken
tell me I’m the only one,
for you in this lifetime or ever
make me believe it’s true
only you …

Author's Note: This one was inspired by the masks (the face we show others) we all wear in life, (i.e. our professional masks, our personal masks to loved ones, our friendship mask, our social masks, our intimate masks, etc.) and how important it is to stay connected with those important to our lives.

Some day when you find something that is forever please let me know. Forever is such a long time and sometimes we must take that instant and savour it for a long time. But still it's wonderful to think of and write about.

You are true to your soul in your writings sweet Alisa. Beautiful, indeed.

I like the lyrical style of this piece. I can hear you singing it my mind.
