Anna

by Shirin Swift

Where the forest dreams
She lays her head
Anna with the mountains
In her hair.

Where no one breathes
Anna dreams
Of forests dreaming
In her hair.

Where the river cries
She smiles instead
Anna with the wetland
In her eyes.

Wild dogs whisper
Through the shed,
Says Anna
Nodding into bed.

Anna, Anna
Where’ve you fled?
The mermaid in the teacup
Said.

Anna tiptoes
Up the hills
Down the other side
She spills.

As songful and beautiful as could be said to a child to sleep and yet... the mystery goes beyond simple, intriguing and delighting. I love the scattering of rhyme, and the looseness of it --like long hair or a river flowing. And the line flow, and images that rise "like a wetland in her eyes".

this so captures one's attention, each refrain of Anna is the flash of the camera that the retina retains.

Sweet, beautiful, gentle... Anna. This is exquisite.

Well, all I can do is add this to my favorites... I am surprised I did not do that already! Exquisitely you, and yet different. One of your gifts is that of many voices (muti-phonic) but with the same sensitive lower depth.

A veritable portrait of Gaea herself. Very nice.

This is lovely; after reading this it feels like I, too, know and adore Anna.
