Amongst the Trees and Leaves

by Ken Harnisch

Amongst the trees and the leaves
Where I will walk
When fair October finds me
I will seek my lover’s eyes
High up in the boughs
Her smile in the branches
Her soul in the breeze

She will kiss me when
The zephyrs play
Against my clothes
And tease me
When my cheeks
Are upturned to the sun

I will dream of days
I lived and only that
And remember, too
In all I knew and lost
That only fair October
Did not desert me

I enter her house
To pay her homage
Every year, never tiring
Of the flame
In her ancient heart
The soft fire that makes my own race
In the morning
And ever on,
And always
Calls me
