Distance

by George Hoerner

from afar all faces
as at a distance all places
look the same
but from a shorter distance
details which appear
as wrinkles across the miles
now appear as friendly smiles
just as music heard from the moon
sounds too soft to be a tune
a kiss blown from afar may never land
and a gentle touch is never felt
from a hand withheld
as feelings held so deep inside
are only felt by the one who there resides
like neighbors who from neighbors hide
like those who fear to take a ride
or take that hand and taste that lip
for life is oh such a short trip

Very convincing. In fact you really moved my heart with this...as I do have a part of me that thinks "Distance" -- allows a kind of talk from afar that is intimate in a way the every day isn't -- (such as here in this poem!) but you are right, and I will "take that hand and taste that lip" as you say... "for life is oh such a short trip". Songfulness heard here!

This is one of the finest ode's I've seen you weave, George. Each and every line is as a wave pummeling the senses awake. I am particularly enamored and fascinated by------details which appear as wrinkles across the miles.
