the common dreamscape of desire

by Lalo Kikiriki

There is a town I dream into
that might be Caldwell, Idaho
that might be Santa Monica
or Thibodaux
may be you know...
Maybe you've been the place I mean...
maybe you've walked there in your sleep
across deserted parking lots...
the plateglass in the storefronts
shocks
reflecting
someone
else.

Familiar unfamiliar love
waits
in some doorway
up dark stairs
kisses...
delicious as
chocolate eclairs.
The shadows tremble,
draw you in...
do not question where you've been...
and like a small town anywhere, they know you there...they know YOU there.

No matter where you go, there you are. A wonderful presentation to the reader. Welcome!

I love your sense of style in this. And with the language you've going for you here, it just makes the overall imagery and effect that much stronger. Great work.

I like they way you word the first stanza to show a dreamer shocked at their reflection. The second stanza seems to speak of one night stands as the darkness of chocolate eclair, dark stairs, and familiar in often unfamiliarity. This piece states the case for it beautifully. For me, love will always be the taste of powdered sugar on a searing beignet. Beautiful writing.

i like the reference to thibodaux. i think in line six you meant 'maybe you've been to the place i mean..' this is really forceful, but in a dreamy way. i feel like i'm being pulled in so many different directions.

I like it. I love the hidden rythm and the dreamlike state you find yourself reading it in. Congrats on POTD.

This one makes me push every button available - a delightful flow, subtle rhyming, - "kisses... delicious as chocolate eclairs" - who could not love these lines!! The trembling shadows intrigues, and the deserted parking lots create mystery, but also remind me how quiet a small town can become. And to think I live a stone's throw from one of these towns you've mentioned!! This is the kind of poem that is a joy to read and reread - it touches so many senses.

Very evocative of long, quiet, dark nights, when there is no other soul around. Not being American, the setting shouldn't really mean a great deal to me, but American film and television is where a fair bit of the world (including the bit I inhabit) gets its dreams from, so maybe the fact that it's somewhere I know primarily from fiction actually adds to the effect.
