The Pining Student by Don Matley
looking out the window
the classroom is full
the professor moves his lips
I do not hear
I only see the warm summer evening passing by
something else transverses my window
a summer storm has come and gone
a fiery orange sun is about to sleep till morn
I want to understand all this
why we are born,live,love,die
suddenly a bird, a gull, flies purposefully across the setting sun
not bothered by anything or anyone
he is so constant in direction and certain
he must have all the answers to all the questions
while I know not what must be sought
the sun now rests
my bird has flown on by
disappearing in the darkness left by the sinking sun
man follows, never reaching and is undone
the sun is gone
the bird is gone
but I still live on
the bell rings
the class is over
life continues
I must be going
Perhaps some day I will meet this bird
and share in his knowing
