almost

by Peter Humphreys

silently
sadness
came
creeping
through
the walls
it was
not meant
to be
this way
no
not at all
we were
almost
happy
nestling
on the
feather
down
cradling
in each
others arms
as
slowly
stealthily
sadly
those walls
our walls
gave up
their
memories

powerful, subtle, sad, haunting. I have never quite felt this image...of "walls" giving "up their memories". it is mysterious, and can be taken different ways. walls can separate people and also enclose them together. here one feels a seeping out, almost a leaking, and an emtying-- as if the walls become "normal" and blank instead of richly ornamented and imbued--which I could see as resulting in lovelessness...
