Snapshots We Take Of Ourselves

by Chris Sorrenti

It’s been said we make our own realities
a combination of willpower or lack of it
and a river of synchonicities
and oh how I’ve changed mine

Set a son free into the Ocean of Circumstance
flew half way across the country to visit a sister
though not of my blood
we drove like madmen through the Rockies
yet still lived to deliver the photos
having lost many portraits these past few years
with more overexposures yet to come

I met a beautiful shaman
who I’ve invited to stay with me
like the bark of Oak and Echinacea combined
she wields powerful healing medicine
a new reason for me to live
now we rent roads and go exploring
both way beyond the children years
with a Canon Rebel instead
strapped into the car seat

It’s been said we shape our own reality
and where the cold hard asphalt ends
the land of submarines begins
propelled by an esoteric fuel
I’ve taken my baby there
we alternate from deep below the waves
to dancing on the surface
in that same Ocean of Circumstance
with a full load of paisley torpedoes
and the rolls of film to prove it

Author's Note: Inspired by a trip to Alberta in April 2007, in addition to my new relationship with fellow poet and artist, Dawn Davidson. An interesting photo, taken in 2010, a few years before selfies became popular. If you’ll notice, Dawn not only captured me, but herself also in the reflection of the window.

Oh I love this, Chris! Being a Nana Anne Geddes wanna be with my grandson, this just captivated me. I've taken far to many photos and have only just begun. My pick for POTD.

It is called "fee will" within the parameters of a complex human framework. Ready mobility does give more options. You've described it so well.

I love the way this flowed, felt like a "road trip" and a grasp at freedom after a time of heaviness. Let the camera speak...

this collection of snapshots guarantees for a great album. Truly enjoyed this read, Chris.

"we alternate from deep below the waves
to dancing on the surface"

So much depth and genuineness comes from within the delight of what this poem speaks. Today —you have me pulling my camera out of its (shamefully) dusty case!
