I Am Yours and You Are Mine by Melissa Arel
anticipating the moment of your entrance
into an imperfect and beautiful world,
my body tells me its preparing
for your inevitable and long-awaited arrival.
the squeeze and release of my rounded swollen belly
steals my breath for a moment in surprise.
i count the moments, the seconds until the next
painful roller-coaster ride of nature's way.
at last the time has come for you to leave me -
this safe and warm haven that has been your home until now.
nervousness and excitement pulses through my veins
and with determined focus, my sanctuaried womb releases you.
i see you for the very first time and wonder how such beauty
could have dwelled within my own bones and flesh.
in an instant i am overcome with such indescribable emotion
as you lay upon my breast and blink at me with fresh eyes.
from this moment on, i am yours and you are mine.
08/27/2007 Author's Note: i decided to think of a memory, and just write about it. the birth of my children was the first thing to come to mind. its such a powerful & emotional event for both mother & baby! :)

| Posted by Ken Harnisch on 08/27/07 at 12:16 PM The title and last line of this poem are its most powerful...and yet, all is held together by the formidable words within, which describe, explain, hallow and enrich! Put this one in a plaque for all your children, Mel |

Wonderful writing, such a lovely tribute for any mother to be. I'd print that off and put it in the photo album of the kids and family. |
