when love was enough

by Melissa Arel

i wish
we could return
to the beginning

when we sat
on top of the hill
overlooking the city below

talking for hours
about nothing
and everything

the music
from the radio
purring in our ears

holding hands
and catching quick pecks
at all the red lights

when love was enough
and all we needed
was one another.

five years later
here we are -

with three children
and piles
of unpaid bills

barely enough time
to say hello
and goodbye

our only contact
with each other
is while we're asleep.

i wish
we could return
to the beginning

when life was
simple
and love was enough.

The early days are wonderful but so are all the rest. Well done Mel.....Charlie

Well done indeed. Those last lines ring wonderfully true.

it is a balancing act, Mel..one I remember well. And yes, it is critical you find some of that simple time away from everything. Some of us who did not wonder how things might have been otherwise.
