memories past

by Peter Humphreys

not
for the
first time
did I
walk
nay
wander
on the
wobbly way
by Dodder bank
through shadows
dappling down
on muddied path
as river rise
and rapid rose
the brown and
bubbling surge
past weir wide
and sultry bend
upon
its search
for sea
and many seasons
have I passed
this spot
yet in my
mind's eye
can I not
but linger
long
on memories past
and farewells
never given
I am
the soul
survivor
of times
when innocence
was lost
and future hopes
deferred
lost
in times
relentless
flow

Author's Note: In August 1968, Soviet tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia to suppress the Dubcek Government. There were violent anti-war demonstrations at the Democrat National Convention in Chicago. And, on this very day in 1968, my older sister and many of her friends were killed in a plane crash in Bavaria. It has been a thought filled day.

So many years ago and yet you bring these memories to life for the lingering. Thank you for sharing the author's note.

Peter, you've out done yourself. This is a beautiful way to remember your sister. You have such a great way with towering poems.
