Retrograde

by Maria Kintner

Fickle Venus, moving backward through time.
The clouds have hidden your way. Following
your dangling stars, ignoring the cuts they make
on our dazzled faces.

Are you lost, Aphrodite, in the blanched summer
night, too furious to care who's hearts you will break?
Whose strings have you cut with your curses and cries,
while the world awaits your tender fall?

Where boy and girl dodge the arrows of your gentle cupid spirit,
who's face glows in your fury. Beware, gentle Goddess,
where you tread, with hopeful souls beneath your feet.

We are but sinners here, lazy in our sweat and fever
for the summer love we've just begun. Those lustful kisses
upon slender necks, and bitten tongues in our fierce embraces.

Even as your anger rises in Aries' favor, we are passionate
and intense, smoldering in the latent heat. The night is just as
cruel as the day. Where we brought fragrant steam to the Gods,
instead we cool our brow with tears, amidst the broken pieces
from your tantrums.

It is only the soft song of Hera, who knows this bitterness,
in her hidden place behind the lighted moon. She gathers the storms
and tears to mourn that even the Goddess of Love has
withdrawn her beauty, holding tight her discord within, and with it,
our suffering.

Author's Note: I just like this. Even if no one else does. :)

I think it rocks. So there.

I like it too. Captivating usage of Greek mythology applied to a modern theme, or better timeless theme. :o)
