The End of a Friend

by Ann Mills

Friendships come and friendships go -
They seem to go for no apparent reason
But there is a time for every season.

I ask myself, “Must this be so?”
Familiarity brings me comfort to keep
But in its contempt drags me down to the deep.

Their end is both painful and a relief -
The grief first tears my soul asunder;
The relief then comes on like rain in thunder.

Washing over me
Cleansing my soul
Refreshing my hope
And making me whole.

I say my good-byes and move on.

Author's Note: Toxic friendships seem like the hardest to end sometimes.

Hi Ann, Great write. Yes, friendships do end at times, why who only knows. It's sad when it does. Friendship is to be cherished and is so precious. One can never have enough friends.

I love this poem because it speaks the attachment to a friend as well as the ability to DETACH from one whom we are powerless to retrieve. Very poignant and well done, Ann.
