laughter is not the best medicine by Ava Bluthe Chinese neighbors are sitting on the balcony
playing a game we do not recognize
making interesting noises,
clink cllllllink woooooooooo
clliinkkkk
baker makes fun of them, calls them origami people
(origami makes me think of bees)
i laugh
i do not find it funny
i do not understand
if i do not laugh, baker will ask why and i do not have the energy to fight
we are friends, barely
he is rarely around
mutual understanding
dont touch me and i wont slap you
cllllinkkkk woooooooo clllinnkkk
he laughs hysterically
tomorrow at work he will tell this story
he will exaggerate and theyll all laugh
not knowing the price of those laughs
and their kids will some day come home,
after learning about origami
just the syllables in the word
will send shivers
as their children begin to laugh
they will recognize
how far they fell
i will not be able to smile though,
even when the realization becomes a thickener in the air
for i once went along,
never innocent,
with all the wrong things.

| Posted by Jean Mollett on 07/24/07 at 03:50 AM Hi Jeanna,
I can see why, after reading this. I can see why you were so upset. I had to look that word up in the ditionary. What it says is;
the Japenese art of folding paper to form flowers, animals figures.
But, from what I gather, it's nothing nice the what he's thinking or using it.
I wanted you to know, that:
Laughter is the best medicine:
If it's used in the right ways. Not making fun of poeple.
You're surely right, that's what he was doing, making fun of them. They have their own ways of doing things.

Posted by Genevieve Sturrock on 07/24/07 at 01:24 PM cruel humor doesn't produce laughter but a sound that always makes me think of someone's soul trying to escape from the ugliness surrounding it. the complex simplicity of origami is way beyond the understanding of some ignorant people. i enjoyed this poem a great deal. thank you for reminding me that i am not alone in my disgust of cruel humor.
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 07/24/07 at 05:17 PM I enjoyed reading this very much - gave me the willies how you followed this from cause to assumption to sharing to perpetuating. I appreciate the author's note.
Posted by Paul Lastovica on 07/24/07 at 05:26 PM . been there - laughed with, and laughed at. and have felt the guilt that comes from it. In cases such as this, laughter is poison.
Posted by Anita Mac on 07/25/07 at 07:44 PM I often feel the same way. I like this, the way you look into the future knowing at least some part of it. Nice. ;o)
