The Motives of Red Riding Hood

by Ken Harnisch

Pity her wounded heart
I am on an errand of mercy
Although I’m far from merciful
And the instincts I have
Towards empathy always seem
To have a darker side whose
Guile and calculations
Give them a devious bent.

The wolf in the story was
Always the hungry one
And yet, Riding Hood
Had motives too, which,
Discounting the fairy tale
Aspect, had a sort of
 Erotic mien to them
You just knew the girl
Had nurtured in her sleep

I think us Cynics
Should just come out with it
It’s about lust or loneliness
For the most part, and if one
Can complement the other
So effortlessly, and at so
Little cost, what’s the harm
In saying so and avoiding
All sorts of complications
Like, oh say, love?
