Life

by Alisa Js

have you ever wondered around the reason
looked at everything, except
as life continues, or does it
is this a vacuum we find ourselves in
as our eyes survey the landscape behind and beyond ...

speak with the aged and they'll tell you
how everything still feels the same, on the inside
loving emotions, heartache and pain
no different than when they were teens,
they remember and share
stories and lessons,
those now ancient faces with heads full of gray
wisdom...

we've all been there
so familiar, regardless
this thread of connectedness
beginnings and ends, start and finish
seasons of gain and regret ...

there is nothing new under the sun
yet, please explain how this feels so brand new
acceptance, contentment, tranquility and shame
for those paths never ventured,
I chose to refrain
yet time passes and this candle burns low,
a flicker sometimes, a spark, a hint
relentless ...

do I stand here and watch it all slide
disappear,
chances
options,
do I give up
succumb,
to a life without struggle, no hope ...

or have we learned it's all meaningless
at the end of the day, that striving
for just one more time
to muster a gallant attempt
go down trying,
swinging
or sit here and die,
where's the answer
in this existence called life?

Picking up on Owen's comment, I think you've done an admirable job on tackling the subject. Excellent expression of wonder at the meaning of life. I wrote a similarly themed poem a few years back, though approaching it from an office environment as that's been my background for 29 years. Here's the link if you want to check it out: http://www.pathetic.org/poem.php?i_poemid=1140715233#comments Aloha back from eastern Canada!!!
