The Day Time Stood Still

by Dan Kasten

It is not lost on me that the ring I wore for twelve years
has scarred the skin on my finger
a realization I did not discover until today

countless times throughout the day my thumb fiddled
with the place that ring had been for so long
my mind aware that something was missing

now to be relegated in the bottom of a drawer
next to my old Tube pass and a key to the gas fireplace
my passport and a stillborn contract that was to stand the test of time.

Author's Note:

"I have always been here
I have always looked out from behind these eyes
It feels like more than a lifetime
Feels like more than a lifetime

Sometimes I get tired of the waiting
Sometimes I get tired of being in here
Is this the way it has always been?
Could it ever have been different?

Do you ever get tired of the waiting?
Do you ever get tired of being in there?
Don't worry, nobody lives forever,
Nobody lives forever."

Excellent expression Dan; I can sooo relate to this in my own way. A firm believer in that time heals most if not all wounds, I kept my wedding band after we split up a generation ago. Every so often it catches my eye when I go into my jewellery box. I pull it out and reminisce, thankful for the experience in how good and bad it made me a stronger wiser soul while I wore it. :o)

You've hit a universal theme I think! I wear my wife's wedding band along with mine. She has been dead for 13 years. No scars, plenty of good memories, a few not so good, but I dwell on the good and the great! Thank you, this touched me very personally.

A fine, yet painful, addition to the new book, Dan. - A drawer of memory and regrets, we all have one somewhere, although the contents may vary from one to another. - A tough subjcet produced simply from that tender area yet healing. - RCat
