FIGMENTS II

by Ken Harnisch

THE BRONTE SISTERS
I wanted so much love
From you; and you, in turn, wanted
Love as it was practiced by the Bronte
Sisters. We both got our wish.
I want more and more, and you do
A lot of nighttime reading yoked
In lace and foundation garments.

THE THIRTEENTH STEP
I used to drink to laugh and live
Then I stopped drinking
Now, others laugh and live.

WHO KNOWS?
She was a star I named
After beauty; I was a rascal
She named after her dog.
Who knows why opposites attract?

MONTAUK POINT IN JANUARY
Craggy rocks froth in the boiling surf
Below us. Wind whips my hair into
Icy spindrift. We have come to Paradise,
As you used to call it, and you still
Hold my hand as tightly as you ever did.
Why, then, don’t you love me anymore?

IN THE SCHEME OF THINGS
God give me the serenity
To accept I am no longer that important
To her in the scheme of things.
Maybe it’s time to think about changing schemes.

Certainly fitting title! (Been a long, long time since I read Millay.) A bit philosophical, whimsical, humor touched as well.
